Realistic sunflower with roots on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A large sunflower with yellow petals and a brown centre sits at the top of a stem that runs down the leg, with green leaves along its length. The roots fan out toward the ankle and are shaded in soft greys, giving a three-dimensional effect. Strong yellows and greens dominate, with smooth blended shading across the petals and leaves against the skin tone.

Your father always said a sunflower on a fishing quay was bad luck, the way it followed the sun instead of the tide, and he would not have one growing in the yard at Skerry Bay. So you pushed a seed into the crack between the slipway and the fish store anyway, packed the soil down with your boot, and watered it from a tin the mornings the fleet went out at four. Nobody on the quay thought it would take. The mortar there is older than the lifeboat house, and the wall is nothing but cold stone and gull droppings.

It took. By midsummer the stem had pushed its way past the fish store roof, and the roots had found their road down through the gaps in the stones, pale and forking, feeling for water in the dark under the harbour. Mrs Oddie next door swore they were lifting her step. The lads from the Morning Star started calling it the foreman, because it stood taller than anyone and never once asked for a day off. When February came in off the Pentland Firth with a wind that tore the nets off the drying poles, the sunflower bent almost to the cobbles and stayed there, and you thought that was the end of it.
It wasn't. The roots held, and by March it had straightened itself, head heavy and gold, turned to the east where the boats come from. You watched it do that every dawn for a month, so when the Morning Star came round the breakwater in the grey, the first thing her skipper saw was that bright face looking back at him. He lifted a hand to it before he lifted a hand to you.
Your father came down to the quay last week, took one look at the wall, and said nothing at all. He just went into the store and came out with a stool, sat in its shade, and waited for the tide to turn.
