Daisy on the upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single daisy sits at the top of a long, thin stem with small leaves and a bud along its length, drawn in dark outline. The petals are lightly shaded with grey and the centre is stippled, with fine linework throughout. The design is set against plain skin, with the stem curving down the arm toward the elbow.

The daisy on the bank above Hobb's Gate had grown a stem as long as my arm by the time Mam told me to leave it be. Nobody in Thornleigh cut a flower that tall. The stem rose out of the nettles as if it had somewhere to be, and the head at the top was wide as a saucer, white at the rim and pinched gold in the middle, like the dish Gran kept her thimbles in.

I was nine that summer and I had a bet with Eddie Ruddock from the mill row that I could touch the beech stump at the forest edge before he counted to two hundred. I lost, because I stopped to look at the daisy. Its leaves were notched like a saw blade, and a bud hung off the stem halfway down, folded tight as a letter nobody had opened yet. I thought it was waiting for something.
Grandad Ashe came down the lane with his billhook on his shoulder and found me squatting in the ditch. He didn't tell me to get up. He crouched beside me, slow with his knees, and said the daisies at the wood's edge were the trees' way of checking who came calling. 'It lifts its face to honest folk,' he said, 'and turns its back on the rest.' I told him that was rubbish. He laughed until he had to sit down on the verge.
The next morning the stem had bent right over the lane, so the flower faced the trees and not the village. Grandad said nothing about it. I left it alone, and when Eddie came up the road he stopped, looked at the bloom for a long while, and went round by the stile without a word.
