Dandelion seeds on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A dandelion seed head sits on a stem that curves down the skin, with several loose seeds drifting up and away towards the top of the frame. The linework is thin and delicate, with light grey shading giving the seed head some depth. The ink is black and the photograph is taken from behind and to the side, with the red and white polka dot top filling the lower edge.

But every June he walked us past the lock at Cold Harbour with his hands in his pockets, and by the time we reached the gates we were already counting seeds.

The barge was the Mary Ellen, green and red, with a stove that smoked whenever the wind came off the weir. Mum taught me to tell the time by blowing. One breath for seven o'clock, she said, and you'd be wrong by hours, but you'd have a good time being wrong. I was nine the summer I tried to blow the whole clock at once and got a face full of seeds and a laugh I still hear when the kettle sings.
The summer Dad sold up, the lockkeeper's boy brought us a clock he'd found in the reeds, its head brown and bent. Dad stood on the roof with it for a long time. Then he shut his eyes and blew, and the seeds went off over the river in a rush, past the willows and the bridge where we'd wintered, until we couldn't tell them apart from the light.
Mum said that was the hour. I checked my watch and it was ten past four, and I have never once been able to say whether she was right.
