White ink roses and scrolls on shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a shoulder and upper back with a tattoo of several roses and leafy scrolling stems. The design is drawn in fine, pale outlines, with no dark ink, so it reads as white ink rather than conventional pigment. The roses sit in a loose cluster across the shoulder blade and upper arm, with stems and curls extending down the back, and the soft, warm lighting sets the pale lines against the skin.

'Check the cool room,' said Maureen Ashdown from her stool by the radiator. She was the groom's grandmother and had been there since six, wrapped in a cardigan the colour of porridge, watching Ruth work with the attention of someone who had once earned her living with steady hands. 'Lorna always puts one behind the buckets.'
Ruth found it there, bowed at the neck and bruised along one petal, and carried it back through the hall. Maureen took it without looking, turned it toward the window where the late sun came through the leaded glass, and ran a thumb down the stem. 'Warm light,' she said. 'That's when you can see the lines. Otherwise they're just a rumour.' She had drawn white roses for a living in Hull in the seventies, she said, on women who wanted something that would show only to the people who already knew it was there.
Ruth wired the rose into the left-hand corner of the arch, low down, where the lamps would catch it at six when the bride walked under. At six the room went gold, and the pale petals stood out against the cream like a drawing someone had pressed into warm glass. Maureen nodded once. 'There,' she said. 'Now it's finished.'
