White ink rose on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows a large rose with swirling leaf and scroll linework across a shoulder and upper back. The design is done in white or very light ink, so the lines appear as pale raised-looking outlines on the skin rather than dark ink. The composition is close and cropped, with the rose sitting over the shoulder blade and the foliage trailing down towards the chest.

Brother Anselm had the scriptorium to himself after Compline, the only hour the prior allowed a man to work without explaining himself. I was meant to be ruling lines on a psalter for the Lady Chapel. Instead I had a stick of silver point and a scrap of scraped calfskin, and I was drawing a rose the size of my palm, the way my mother drew them on the lids of her linen chests before she married and left the valley.

Anselm found me at it. He had been the house's illuminator until his eyes clouded, and he had once been paid in wine by a bishop's steward to paint saints in gold. He did not scold. He pulled his stool close, held the vellum to the window where the moon came through, and tilted it until my lines caught the light and showed pale, like frost on a pane. "Nobody reads that," he said, "but everyone feels it when they lean in." He showed me how to let the leaves trail and curl down the margin, each scroll tighter than the last, so the eye ran off the edge and had to come back.

We slid the sheet under the boards of the psalter, where the prior would never think to look. The book went out to the chapel in spring, and the Lady Chapel's feast came and went under ordinary black ink. Nobody saw the rose until a novice, reading by a lantern held low, tilted the page the way Anselm had taught me and gasped.

The prior closed the book, said nothing, and sent me back to my ruling pen. But at Lauds the next morning there was a small rose drawn in silver on the inside of the chapel door, and no one in the house ever admitted to it.
