Dear Ruth, you'll think I've gone soft, but I'm writing this on the back of the order of service because the reception has gone quiet and Gwen's nephew has finally fallen asleep under the marquee table. Yesterday, before the vows, I walked the lane behind the church with the flower girl, who is five and furious about her shoes. We found a dandelion clock by the churchyard wall, grey and perfect, and she wanted to blow it for luck.

I told her the rule Dad taught us: one breath, one wish, and you don't say it aloud or it won't count. She shut her eyes so hard her whole face creased. Then she puffed, and the seeds went up in a mess, catching the low sun. Some drifted over the gate towards the allotments, and the rest hung over the hedge as if they'd forgotten where they were meant to go.

She asked me afterwards what she'd wished for. I said I couldn't tell her, which was true, because I'd been watching the seeds and had forgotten to wish anything myself. That's the bit I keep turning over. Forty years I've been making wishes on those things, and yesterday I just looked.

Gwen's dress was let out at the seams this morning, not that she'd ever admit it. Come on Saturday if you can. Bring the good tablecloth back, I've still got your gravy stain on it.
