Five birds in flight on a shoulder
Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
Five solid black bird silhouettes are arranged in a loose diagonal flock, with the largest bird at the left and the smallest at the right. The shapes are simple, filled and unshaded, with no outline or interior detail. The tattoo sits on smooth skin beside the collarbone, and a white lace off-shoulder top fills the lower part of the frame.

The ark's aviary was the last thing aboard that still answered to the old word for weather. Every other chamber ran on numbers: oxygen, water, the slow arithmetic of who ate what. But the birds flew in a loose slant from the north wall to the south, the big grey one always first and the smallest always trailing, and Ines had come to think of the flock as a sentence nobody had finished writing.
On the ninth day of the long dark, Commander Halloran came down to the glasshouse with a clipboard and a face like a shut hatch. He wanted the birds listed for salvage. Ines asked him what he thought a finch weighed against a ration of algae, and he said, quite gently, that he had never once seen a bird fly through a bulkhead, and that was the answer.
She opened the far vent that evening, the one that faced the dead star-field. Air hissed out, and the flock went up in a rush, five dark shapes slanting toward the black glass. For a moment they were only birds against nothing at all. Then the vent sealed, and Ines stood with her hand on the cold rim, counting again, and getting five.
