Three small birds in flight on arms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Several small black silhouettes of birds in flight are tattooed in a loose diagonal line, with a trio on the inner wrist of one arm and a matching trio on the upper arm of another. The linework is thin and simple, with solid black fill and no shading. The ink is black only, and the warm, soft-focus skin tones of the photograph make the birds stand out clearly.

The birds came in off the Solent at dawn, three of them, low over the water. Marit counted them from the signal tower the way her mother had taught her, by their wingbeats rather than their shapes, because the shapes all looked alike at this distance. Nothing else left the coast that could fly so straight. The gulls had gone in the Cull and then the crows, and what remained were the carrier swifts bred in the old lofts at Netley, small enough to slip through the scrub that had grown over the drowned motorways.

Her sister Ilse kept the other loft, four miles inland across the reed beds. They had not spoken since the spring, when a swift arrived at Marit's perch with a band that read the wrong date. She had decided it was a joke. Ilse never made jokes. Marit wrote one line on a scrap of chart paper, rolled it into a capsule, and sent it west the next morning: the swifts fly the ridge when the tide turns, and they always come home by the same line.
The tide turned early that afternoon. Hours later three shadows crossed the setting sun above the reeds, tracing the diagonal Marit had inked on the chart for years, the one line the swifts never broke. They had been flying the route all along, waiting for someone to send them the right answer.
She broke the wax on the capsule with her thumb. Inside there was no letter, only a pressed swift feather and a tide table with one day circled in Ilse's cramped hand, the day they had last stood together on the causeway. Marit folded the paper back along its creases, climbed down the ladder, and went to fetch the lamp.
