Small feather tattoo on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A small feather is drawn in black ink on the shoulder of a person whose face is not visible. The feather has fine outlines and soft grey shading along its barbs, angled diagonally across the skin. The image is backlit, leaving the skin in warm tones and the background almost white, with a dark garment along the lower edge.

The rules said organic material crossed only with a certificate. Nobody ever carried a certificate for a feather.

She wrote 'one feather, personal, retained by traveller' on the form and stamped it, because the form had no box for geese. He thanked her and walked out into the car park, where the sodium lights were coming on one by one over the empty road.
At the end of her shift she found a single grey barb caught in the lining of her own coat, pale against the navy wool. She could not say how long it had been there, and she left it where it was.
