Dandelion with drifting seeds on the hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black dandelion clock sits on the back of the hand, with its stem curving down and several seeds drifting off to the left. The linework is fine and the seed head is built from dots and short strokes in solid black ink. The photograph is a close, slightly warm-toned crop showing a pink-lipped mouth above the hand and a dark zipped bag below.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags Tennant had counted the seeds on the old dandelion clock three times before the east wind came round, and by then half the harbour wall was watching her do it. Her brother Alf had bet a shilling she would never manage a single breath. Nobody had bet on the gulls.

Her gran used to say every seed on a clock was a year somebody on the far side of the water was waiting out. You blew, the years went sailing off over the slipway, and wherever they settled, the waiting ended. Mags had never believed a word of it. Still, ninety-one seeds lifted at once and went skating across the boats, and she saw a few catch in the rigging of the Mary Ann, which was out past the breakwater with her father aboard.

The count was wrong, though. She had been reckoning on ninety-one years, and when the last grey tuft came away in her fingers she saw there was one more, still fixed to the stalk. Alf went quiet on the wall. The gulls went quiet with him.

Mags held the bare stem up to the light for a long while. Then she kept it in her fist and let the final seed ride the wind out over the water, where the Mary Ann was already turning for home.
