Dandelion seeds turning into birds on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A dandelion clock sits near the wrist, with its seeds breaking away and turning into small flying birds that trail up the forearm. The linework is thin and delicate, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The composition is cropped close to the wrist, with a woman's lips and a dark jacket with a zip in the background.

"Mind your breath, Tom Hardcastle, that clock's not yours to waste. Your mam will have the kettle on by four, and you'll not be told the time by a dandelion twice in one afternoon."

He puffed anyway, cheeks red as the pillar box on Church Street, and the seeds went up off the stalk like someone had shaken out a sheet. Nan Ada put her hand flat on the churchyard wall to steady herself and watched them. They did not drift down the way seeds ought to. Every one that caught the light turned over once, stretched its wings, and was a bird, small and black against the sky above the mill.

"That's the thing nobody tells you," she said. "They only go to the places you've been meaning to leave. Your grandad's went to Hull on the Tuesday he never came home from the docks. Swifts, every one of them, the fast kind."

Tom wanted to know where the birds were going now. Ada said up the hill, over the moor road, past the bus shelter where Eileen Prior stood every Friday in her good gloves, waiting for a letter that never came. Some would settle on the school roof and be sparrows by teatime. Some would go all the way to the sea.

The last seed would not let go. It sat on the stalk, grey and round, shivering a little in the wind off the beck. "That one's yours," Ada said, closing the boy's fingers gently round the stem. "Blow when you're ready. Not before, mind."
