Compass rose on upper back
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink compass rose sits on the upper back, with a circular ring, an eight-point star and long needle-like pointers. The W and S cardinal letters sit at the ends of the points. The linework is thin and the shading is light, set against soft, warm skin tones and a blurred background.

The boats at Skerrow went out before the light and came back when the tide allowed, and nobody asked the Pell brothers why they had stopped going out at all. Their father had left them the brass compass in a cracked box, and the older brother, Tam, would not let it be opened. The younger, Ewan, kept it in his coat anyway, turning it over on the quay while the gulls argued above the fish market.

One November the nets came up empty three days running. The skippers blamed the moon, then the herring shoals, then each other. Ewan took the compass to the old woman who mended sails in the loft above the chandler's, and she held it up to the window and said the needle was not broken, only tired of pointing the same way for so long. She told him a compass rose was never meant to show you where the fish were. It showed you where you stood, and that was all a man could know for certain.
He went back to the harbour and found Tam on the slipway, scraping weed off the hull of the old Mary Ann. Ewan sat on an upturned creel and did not offer advice. He just laid the box open on the wet stone. The needle swung, wavered, and settled west. Tam looked at it for a long time, then at the grey water beyond the wall, and reached for the oar.
They went out on the ebb with the wind behind them. Off the Sker Rocks they found the shoal exactly where the needle had told them to look, and by dusk the hold was full. Tam never said the compass had been right. He only started, that winter, to sign his name with a small star beside it.
