Stormtrooper helmet on the inner wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a Stormtrooper helmet from Star Wars, shown in front view with a rounded dome, a dark visor band and eye lenses, and a textured mouth grille. The design uses clean black outlines with light grey shading inside the visor and along the helmet's edges. It is centred on the inner wrist against a plain skin background, with a laptop keyboard visible at the left edge of the frame.

Hush now, and leave the kettle be, it's still ticking. The night the lamps failed along Mill Street, old Ansel Frew came down the steps with a white helmet tucked under his arm. Nobody in Carrick Quay had ever seen a helmet that white. He'd dug it out of a skip behind the tram depot, the dome dented, the visor band gone grey with soot, and he carried it home like a gull with a broken wing.

He spent three nights on it with a tin of paint and an old toothbrush. The mouth grille came up black as a coal sack, and the eye lenses went dark as the river under the arches. Folk came by to gawp. The baker's boy asked if it could see through walls. Ansel said it could only see what the wearer chose to look at, which is more than most men manage.

On the fourth night the lamps went out again and the whole district sat in the dark, waiting for someone to tell them what to do. Ansel pulled the helmet on, stood at the top of Mill Street, and walked down it slow, touching each dead bulb with two fingers so the wires would find their way back. Every lamp he touched came up blinking, until the street glowed the colour of weak tea.

When they asked him after how he'd done it, he only rapped the visor with his knuckle and said the helmet never did a thing. Then he went home and slept till noon. The visor, mind, still carries a lamp-shaped smudge on the left lens, and it never did come off.
