Tomas had been told the iron man was a tax collector from the valley towns, come to count the salt. But the flower was real. It had roots in the seams and dew on its petals, and when the guard rapped the visor with his knuckle, a small pink blossom unfolded from the cheek like a tongue poking out at him. The clerk laughed, stamped nothing, and waved the cart through.

So I tell you: when you meet a man with a face like a shut door, look for the flower. The helmet is only the part that frightens. The daisy is what he carries across. Now pass me that cup, and mind the goats.
