Death Star and fighters on the ribs

Blackwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey Death Star sits on the side of the ribs, with TIE fighters and X-wing shapes drifting away from it as small silhouettes and scattered dots. A curved, tapering line runs down from the base of the sphere. The soft grey shading and open background give the design a loose, faded look, shown in a close phone photo of a torso with a black top and jeans.

Sit down, love, the bench is warm and the 4.10 is never on time anyway, so you've got a while. There was a signalman at Haverleigh Junction called Dennis Pyle who kept a dandelion clock in a jam jar on his windowsill. Every summer the verges along the cutting went to seed, and he'd pick the best one and blow it out over the sleepers for luck, the way his mother had taught him. Nobody thought it odd. Trains need all the luck they can get.

One August a boy came up the footbridge with a tin of silver paint nicked from the depot and a face like a wet Sunday. He wanted to know how a whole moon comes apart. Dennis told him moons don't come apart, they only lose their seeds, and the seeds always travel further than you'd think. The boy didn't follow, so Dennis gave him a stalk of grass and a cheese sandwich and sent him off down the line.

Years went by, as they do. Then a postcard came to the box from a port in the south, and on it was a grey ball hanging off a single thin stem, with a scatter of tiny ships pulling away from its face like the last seeds off a head. Across the back, in careful capitals: THEY WENT FURTHER THAN I THOUGHT.

Dennis pinned it to the frame of his window, next to the jar, and every evening after that he'd open the sash and wait for the 8.40 to rattle past. Some nights a seed would come loose off the jar and drift out across the lines, and he'd say, quite plainly, off you go then.
