Watercolour-style tattoo on the side of the torso showing the Deathly Hallows triangle symbol, a sketched animal and the script Expecto Patronum.

Deathly Hallows and Patronus on the side

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a Deathly Hallows triangle with a circle and vertical line at the left, a sketched animal figure at the right and the script words Expecto Patronum running beneath them. The linework is loose and sketchy in black, softened by blue and teal wash splashes that fade into the skin. The design spreads across the side of the body with open space around it.

Dear Tomas,

The fog rolled into Porthlanow on Tuesday and sat on the harbour like wet wool, and your father's boat was still out past the Mouse Rock. I went down to the wall with the chalk you left in the tin, the one you used when we were nine and believed every word of the book you kept under your pillow. The lines had washed nearly away. I redrew them anyway: the bar across the base of the triangle, the circle hanging above it, the thin line cutting down through the middle. Then I said the words the way you always made us say them, loud enough to startle the gulls. Expecto Patronum.

Nothing happened, of course. A woman of fifty-one with chalk on her knees does not summon anything. But the mist over the water thinned for the length of one breath, and in the gap I saw a pale creature trotting along the top of the swell, low and quick, something between a dog and an otter, silver as the belly of a mackerel. It went out past the breakwater and kept looking back, the way you used to when you wanted me to follow you into the rock pools.

I followed it to the slipway. Then I heard the engine. Your father came in at half past nine, cursing the compass and saying the fog had turned the whole coast round on him. He said a grey shape kept running ahead of the bow and he steered by it because it was the only thing he could see. I told him it was probably a seal. He didn't argue, and neither did I.

I've left the chalk on the wall. Come home at Easter and draw the triangle with me, and we'll see if the gulls still scatter.

Mum
