Colour tattoo on a forearm of a teal forest scene inside a black triangle, with a dark figure silhouetted under a glowing ring, above a script quote attributed to Albus Dumbledore.

Deathly Hallows triangle and quote on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A dark triangle frames a teal forest scene with tall trees, in which a black silhouette of a figure raises a glowing orb inside a pale ring of light. Below the triangle, black cursive script reads 'It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live' with the attribution 'Albus Dumbledore'. The shading is soft and painterly within bold black outlines, and the teal tones dominate the piece.

Brannoch's wife sent him up the hill road at dusk with a loaf and a candle stub, because the old keep above Carrow Glen had been dark since the spring floods and she wanted to know if the cellar had flooded too. He found the gate hanging by one hinge. Inside, the courtyard was knee deep in ferns, and the walls leaned like tired men.

In the north tower a grey-haired woman sat on a fallen capital, stringing tiny glass beads onto thread. She did not look up. "You've come to ask about the lamps," she said. "The lamps were my husband's. He spent forty years lighting them and never once lit his own supper."

Brannoch said nothing. She told him she had dwelt on the dead man so long that the ferns had grown over the stair, and the glen had grown dim along with her. Then she stood, lifted the thread, and a ball of pale light rose from the beads and hung in the broken arch, ringing slowly like a bell with no clapper. The forest beyond the wall went teal and bright in it, every trunk lit from within.

"Carry that down," she said. "And light your own supper."

He carried it down. The cellar was dry. His wife set the bread on the table, and the light drifted above the shelves until morning. When the old woman died the following winter, the ring of light was still hanging in the north tower, and nobody in Carrow Glen dared take it down.
