Deathly Hallows triangle and script quote on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A blue and black Deathly Hallows triangle sits above black script lettering that reads "Don't let the Muggles get you down darling". Inside the triangle, a dark silhouette of a figure raising an arm stands before a glowing moon ringed in white, with tree silhouettes around it. The shading is soft blue with black outlining and white highlights, and the lettering is set in flowing, uneven strokes.

Mavis Quarrie had counted the tent poles twice that morning and found one missing, which was about right for the Harrowgate Travelling Show in its fourteenth bad season. The big top sagged over the paddock in Cumbria like a wet hat. The ringmaster had sold the elephant in March and the lions in May, and now the only thing left worth a penny was Ossian Vale, who could still draw a silver moon down out of the night air if he was given a clearing, a dark wood and nobody watching but the crows.

Tonight the clearing was the strip of birch behind the lorries. Ossian stood at its centre with his coat black against the blue lamp she had hung from a branch. He had been drinking since noon. "They'll not come," he said. "The bailiffs have chained the gate." Mavis struck a match from the box in her apron pocket and lit the lantern wick. "Then they'll see you anyway. Don't let them get you down, darling. You're the only act we've got left."
He lifted his arm. Light rose from his palm and spun out over the birches in a white ring, and for a breath the whole wood turned the colour of deep water. Nobody came through the gate. Nobody needed to. Ossian lowered his arm slowly and sat down in the wet grass, shaking, the way he always did afterwards.
Mavis sat beside him and passed him the flask. "Tomorrow we'll sell tickets to the moon," she said. "Half price for the sky." He laughed until he coughed, and above them the real moon hung in the trees exactly where it had been, ringed in white, as if it had only been waiting for someone to ask.
