The gold leaf is still drying on the bench when the best man rings to ask whether the marquee sign can be done in the old capitals, the ones from the pattern book with the pencil-point fills. You tell him the book is in the drawer under the size two brushes, where it has been since your mother stopped taking commissions, and that the Z will take a full afternoon because each fill has to be laid by hand between the bars.

Saturday arrives with rain that stops just long enough. The couple's names go up first, Hannah above Tomasz, then the date in the smaller hand you keep for church notices. Nobody asks what pencils are doing on a wedding sign, and you don't mention that your mother used to tell customers each dark tip was a word not yet written, a little rest before the next line.

When the marquee is lit that evening, you stand at the back by a tent pole and watch the letters catch the lamps. A boy of about nine reads them aloud, slowly, one by one, and stops at the Z, frowning at its curled end. You want to tell him the trick is to see the fill as the point of a pencil and the letter as the thing it has just finished writing. Instead you wait, and he gets there on his own, grins, and runs back towards the dancing.

Outside, the car park is slick with rain, and the sign's reflection lies across it in a long row of upright shapes, each one sharpened for whatever somebody has to say next.
