The letters on Hallan were never plain. Her father used to say a letter had to stand on something, so every upright got a little peak of black at its foot, a wedge like a hill seen from the sea, and every crossbar got a diamond pinned to it where a bolt might go. Tourists photographed the boards and asked if it was a special font. She told them it was just how the island wrote.

By dusk the word stood out over the quay in heavy outlines, the peaks filled solid, the diamonds bright enough to catch the last light off the water. Donald from the ferry office came out with his tea and stood a long time reading it under his breath.

"Your da would have liked that," he said. "Took him forty minutes to do a single C."

Mairi wiped her hands on her jeans and looked at the second C, which she had gone back to fill, the wedge at its base still wet. "He'd have said I'm too quick," she said, and climbed down.
