It stopped under the sodium lamp and turned its head towards the barrier. Its legs were long and fine as knitting needles, its mane lifted off its neck as though it stood in a current I couldn't feel, and its tail ended in a curl that caught the light like a struck match. I said what you always say. Passport, please. It did not have one. It looked at me instead, steady and unbothered, and my paperwork suddenly seemed like something a child had drawn.

Through the fog came the hunt: hounds bellowing, a rider with a brass horn, and a man in a waxed green coat shouting that the beast was stray property of an estate that had been dead since the war. I had a form for stray property. I could have stamped it there and then. Instead I lifted the barrier, and the creature walked through with its mane brushing my wrist, cold as a church bell in January.

The hunters reached the gate and met my flat stare, and the rider's horn died in his hand. Nobody on that side of the line wanted to be the one who ran. In the morning the form still sat in my tray: Items crossed, one. Reason for crossing, none given. Duration, unknown. I initialled it, and the frost on the lane beyond the gate had not melted when I drove home.
