Descending circles on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A column of black tattoo circles runs down a pale forearm, starting with small solid dots at the top and growing into larger outlined circles towards the wrist. One of the mid-sized circles has a diagonal line passing through it, and the lines are thin and even. The tattoo is black ink only, shown against a bed sheet printed with pink, red and white flowers.

"Your father never struck a well off the map in ink," Mrs Oduya said, tapping the survey sheet with a pencil she had chewed flat. "He drew a line through it and told the company the dust had won."

Teodor leaned over the table in the back room of the Halfway Café on the Coyote Flats road. The sheet showed eleven wells between the escarpment and the salt pan, each drawn as a circle, one beneath another, like beads on a string. The ones near the top were small solid dots, cisterns hand-dug by the first families out there. Lower down, the circles had outlines and grew wider as the country flattened, dug later by rigs that left neat, even rings behind them.

He counted down with his finger. Seven circles, then the one with the diagonal stroke through it. Kestrel Bend. His father's last entry said the water there was low but sweet, and a week later the truck was found parked in its shade, the keys on the seat, the tank still half full. Nobody had ever explained the stroke. Teodor had always assumed it meant the well was finished. Mrs Oduya thought it meant his father had finished with the well.

He drove out the next morning with a bucket, a tape measure and a notebook he had not yet written in. At Kestrel Bend the water sat black and round in the stone ring, holding a perfect square of sky. He dropped in a pebble and listened for a long time before it rang.

Back at the café, he opened the sheet and drew a fresh circle at the bottom, outlined and unstruck. Mrs Oduya studied it over her glasses. "Well?" she asked. "Still there," said Teodor.
