Planets in a vertical line on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small arm, photographed from the wrist upwards, shows a vertical row of planet-like forms in black ink. Circles of varying sizes sit beside small dots, with one ringed planet resembling Saturn near the centre. The linework is thin and the shading is light, set against bedding and a plain background.

Dear Tom,

The Marigold is still up on the slip where you left her, and Mr Hallam has been painting her hull every afternoon in the drizzle, because he says a boat should look ready even when nobody is aboard. Your postcard came on Tuesday with the Valparaiso stamp. I read it to Mother twice, and then once more when she was asleep.

I have been doing what you asked and going up to the lifeboat house to look at Father's orrery. The little brass ball for Mercury has rattled loose in the drawer again, so I have wrapped it in a handkerchief and put it in my coat pocket for Mr Pryce at the chandlery, who says he can solder it if I bring it before Friday. Every evening I count the planets out loud the way Father taught us, from the sun outward, with my finger tapping the glass. Mars is the red one. Saturn is the one with the hoop that always made you cross because it wouldn't sit straight.

Last night the sky cleared over the harbour mouth, so I took Father's spyglass to the breakwater and waited for the cold to get into my knees. Saturn was low over the water, fat and steady, not winking the way the others do. Then I noticed the little dots that sit along the chart in the margin, the ones Father always said were moons nobody bothered to name. I think they are the ones who never get a turn in the lessons. I have decided they are the ones who keep the others company.

Write back soon and tell me which one you think you are. I will keep the lamp lit in the front window until the Marigold is launched.

Love, Nell
