Thin outline circle on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single thin black circle outline sits on the inner wrist, with the hand visible at the bottom of the frame. The linework is even and fine, with no shading or fill inside the circle. The skin tone is light and the tattoo is centred, with a white paper or cloth surface behind the arm.

The ring had worked loose in the February gale, and by the time Dessie and I reached the lantern room the rain was driving through the gallery rail in grey sheets. Her grandfather had built the light on Skerry Mora, and he had scribed the first circle himself, a thin line cut into the iron to mark where the panes would sit. Dessie said it was the only straight thing on the whole rock. I told her nothing on Skerry Mora was straight except the tides, and she laughed so hard she nearly dropped the bolt into the sea.

Once the collar was tight we stood in the wet and watched the beam go out across the water, a clean ring of light that closed on itself every time it swept round. Dessie traced the arc on the wet glass with one finger. "Round is the only shape that doesn't need a corner to hold it," she said, and I did not argue.

The relief boat came in the morning, and the inspector climbed the stairs with his clipboard and his opinions. Before he reached the top I went down to the landing and found her circle on the window, drawn in the condensation with the tip of a finger. It had already begun to fade, so I left it where it was for the next keeper to find.
