Mountains and pines inside a triangle

Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large triangle frames a hatched mountain range with solid black pine trees along the base, cut across by a single horizontal line. A small open circle sits in the empty upper section of the triangle. The mountains use fine cross-hatching for shading, while the trees are filled in solid black, and the bold outlines give the composition a clean, graphic edge.

The level sat on the trestle exactly where Father Anselm had left it, its bubble trapped dead centre, which told me nothing about the valley except that someone had been careful with it. I was nineteen and had been sent up the Haldern ridge to find where the king's new road should cross the tree line. The map showed the pass as a triangle of ink on vellum, three clean sides, and I had already decided that all three were lies.

I ruled the horizon across the sheet at the height of my eye, one straight stroke, and everything above it became sky while everything below became work. The peaks came up in fine hatched lines, each ridge a hand's width of shadow, and along the foot the pines stood solid as ink, because the forest had never once let a surveyor see through it. Sigrun, the guide who had walked me up, said the old chart-makers drew the mountains inside a triangle so the kingdom would stay small enough to fold into a coat pocket.

On the third night the cloud broke, and I drew the moon in the blank space above the peaks, a small open ring, the only thing on the sheet I had not measured. Sigrun watched me do it and said that was the place where the mountains stopped being the king's business.

I sent the chart down with the road crew in the morning, the pass pinned at the base of the pines. The king's men read the triangle as a border and marked it in red. I kept the moon sketch inside my coat, where the wet could not reach it, and every spring I climb back up to see whether the ring is still there.
