Mountain landscape in a diamond frame on the back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A diamond-shaped frame holds a mountain range drawn in fine black linework, with a crescent moon and scattered stars in the sky above. Dense dotwork shading fills the sky and darkens the pine trees along the lower edge, while the ridges are left as open lines. The design is in black ink only and sits centred on the upper back against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The old woman was drawing mountains in the dust with a stick when Hakon came up the goat track, and she did not look up. "Twelve ridges," she said. "Count them with me, and do not count the ones that are only shadow." He counted, and lost his place at seven, and she laughed at him without unkindness. Her husband had gone over the range the summer before, she told him, because he had looked at the stars instead of the ground. The stars were thick above the pass and they all looked like roads.

She showed him how to read the moon. In the month of the barley harvest the thin moon hangs over the western ridge, its horn pointing at a notch between two peaks. Walk toward the horn, she said, and never turn to the stars, and the pines at the foot of the slope will let you pass. Look up at the scatter of lights and the pines will close behind you and you will walk until your feet forget your name. Hakon asked how she knew. She pointed at the dust, at the dark scratches she had made for the trees, and said that she had drawn the same range for forty years and had never once been wrong about the notch.

He carried the drawing down to the village on a flat slate, and his brother Oren took the goats while he was gone. On the third night the moon was thin and bright over the ridge. Hakon walked with the slate tied to his back, keeping the horn in front of him, and when the trees crowded close he kept his eyes on the ground. At dawn he came down into a valley where the salt lake lay white and still, and a boat was already waiting at the shore, its owner asleep on the thwart. Hakon sat in the grass and waited for the sun.

When he came home he scratched the range into the lintel above the door, leaving the ridges bare and filling the pines in black. His son asks him each spring why the sky is full of dots. Hakon tells him they are only there so you remember which way is down.
