Saturn and rocket finger tattoos
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest together on a dark surface, showing small tattoos on the middle and ring fingers. One tattoo is a black outlined ringed planet resembling Saturn, and the other is a tiny black outlined rocket pointing upward. The linework is thin and simple, with minimal or no shading, and the image is in colour with coral nail polish as the main colour contrast.

The model shop on Gull Row had been shut since March, but Dilys still wore the key on a bootlace under her coat, and on the first wet Saturday of September she let herself in to find Arun already perched on the counter, swinging his heels. "You said four," he said. "It's ten past." "Then you've been waiting ten minutes, which serves you right for turning up early."

They had gone to the tattooist above the chip shop the summer they were sixteen, the same afternoon, with the same forty pounds between them. He'd chosen the ringed planet because it looked like a jam ring someone had dropped in the sky. She'd chosen the rocket because it was the only thing in the shop's flash book that looked like it was trying. Every September since, they'd promised to fly the balsa rocket from the kit they'd never finished, the one with the fins sanded the wrong way.
They carried it up to the headland in a carrier bag, past the bench where somebody had carved a name nobody could read anymore. The wind off the Channel took the first launch straight into the gorse. The second went sideways, clipped a fence post and dropped at their feet like it was embarrassed. Arun laughed so hard he had to sit down in the wet grass, and Dilys stood over him with the rocket in one hand and the planet catching the grey light on the other.
"Still pointing up," he said, squinting at her fingers.
"Obviously," she said, and threw the rocket once more, and watched it climb.
