A cherry-topped dessert with swirled whipped cream and two spoons sits above a heart-shaped frame filled with cake, a gummy bear, a swirl lollipop and scattered sweets. The tattoo runs vertically up the lower leg, with the heart frame and sweets filling the lower half.

Nobody ordered the Heartbreak Sundae for three weeks, so Walt Dempsey started giving it away to whoever stood at the counter long enough to look hungry. You were the one who got it on a Tuesday, the afternoon the rain came sideways off the grain silos and turned Main Street into a river of slate.

It arrived in a tin heart-shaped dish, whipped cream piled high as a bride's veil, a maraschino cherry balanced on top with its stem bent like a question. Two long spoons crossed over the rim. Walt had tucked a green gummy bear into the cake and a swirl lollipop into the side, because his daughter Ruthie had insisted the thing needed something alive in it. You ate around the bear for a full minute before you could bring yourself to take it.

Ruthie came out from the back with a tray of cookies and sat on the stool beside you, close enough that her elbow knocked your cup. She had been saving a sugar-glass ring for the county fair, and she wanted you to see it, so she showed you the cellophane wrapper she had pressed flat under the Bible on the shelf. "Eat the cherry last," she said. "Nobody ever eats it last."

You did. The rain thinned to a drizzle while the sweetness went to nothing in the bottom of the dish, and when you finally lifted the cherry it was warm from the lamp over the counter. Walt flipped the sign to Open, and the first customer came in shaking water from his hat, asking for coffee and a cheese sandwich, and nobody asked about the dessert again.
