Realistic fruit and vegetables on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A cluster of fruit and vegetables is rendered in realistic detail, including an onion, a mushroom, raspberries, pea pods with peas, broccoli, a tomato, a strawberry and blueberries. The shading builds soft highlights and shadows on each form, and the composition wraps around the curve of the leg. Greens, reds, oranges and blues dominate the palette.

Dear Tom, the rain has come in sideways over Cotton Row since Tuesday, and still Mr Pemberton will not cover his stall with anything but a sheet of old tarpaulin. He says the peas will go soft if they're kept in the dark, so the pods sit in their wooden crates with water running off the awning in a thin silver line, and the rest of us stand under the cathedral arch pretending we aren't watching him.

Business has been odd. Yesterday a woman in a green coat bought the whole punnet of raspberries without asking the price, then came back for the strawberries, then asked whether he had any onions that would keep until Christmas. He sold her three, the papery brown ones with a purple tinge, and gave her a bag of blueberries for nothing because she looked like she needed something to be pleased about. The flat dark mushrooms, the ones that smell of cellars, went to the restaurant on the corner before eight. Nobody bought the broccoli. It sits in the middle of the display like a small green cloud that has lost its way.
I saved you the best tomato, the big ribbed one from the Kentish glasshouse, which is too heavy for the post and too stubborn to cut without a fight. I have wrapped it in newspaper with a handful of pea pods, and I have put the strawberry on top where you'll see it first when you open the box. It won't survive the journey. Neither, I suppose, will the sea air, but you always did like to test things. Come home when the ships stop rocking. Mr Pemberton says the rain never stays long here, only long enough to make the puddles shine.
