Diabetic script lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The image shows the word Diabetic in flowing black script with a large looped capital D, sitting on the inner forearm. A thin pale blue arc curves around the left side of the D, and the lettering is crisp with smooth, even linework. The photo is taken straight on against a plain skin tone with a blue-grey fabric visible at the bottom edge.

Dear Nell,

The Marigold came into Grimsby on Tuesday with her bow stove in, and Captain Oakes wanted her name back on the transom before the tide turned. I took the brushes down on the quay in a cold wind, with the gulls going off over the fish sheds like thrown paper. My hand shook so badly I had to rest the mahl stick against a bollard to steady it.
The lettering was all copperplate loops, nothing square about it. I started with the capital M and let its loop run out past the stern rail, the way your mother taught me to let a swan's neck run before lifting the brush. The last thing I did was the thin blue line curling round the start of the name, so it looked like water holding her up. Oakes asked why blue when the hull was black. I told him a boat needs something under her name that isn't paint.
Here is the part I want you to know. When I'd finished, a boy from the rigging gang stood under the transom with his head tipped back and read the name out loud, slowly, letter by letter, as if he were learning to read again. Then he said it was the finest thing he'd seen on the whole coast and went off whistling. I doubt he understood a word of the craft, but he was looking straight at the work, and that's all a sign-writer ever really wants.
Write back and tell me how the school term is going. Keep your loops straight and your hand light.
Dad
