Diabetic script lettering on a wrist

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

Cursive lettering spells the word Diabetic across the wrist, with the letter i replaced by a blue figure 1. The linework is black and fairly fine, with slightly heavier strokes on the capital D. The close crop of the wrist sits against plain skin, with soft lighting and little background.

Dear Nell, you asked why I dropped a blue one into the middle of Mrs Ashdown's word, and I told you it was a slip of the brush. That was only half true. She wanted black copper-plate for the window of her little shop on Tanner Lane, nothing loud, the sort of script that looks as if it was there before the bricks. I laid the hairlines first, thin as a spider's leg, then turned the brush on its edge for the capital so the stroke swelled and thinned like the tide coming up the slipway.

By four o'clock the word was finished except for the figure, and I sat with the brush drying in my hand for a long time. The i wanted a dot and a stem, and I could not make it just a letter. I thought of the Bramley trees behind her cottage, and how she walked the rows each morning counting windfalls before anyone else was up. So I mixed a blue like the sky over the far hedge and painted a one where the i should have been. She never asked what it meant. She only ran her thumb along the cold glass and said the blue was the first thing people would see.

She was right, though not in the way she meant. Kids pressed their noses to the pane to see it, and a man from the council stopped to ask whether the sign was a special offer. Mrs Ashdown let him wonder. When the apples came in that September she sent a box round to every house on the lane, each one wrapped in tissue, and a slip of paper in the top of each box that said only: look for the blue.

When you finish your time with me, paint one thing nobody asked you for, and set it where the morning light will catch it. Keep the brush clean, and don't let anyone talk you into a plain black i. Your loving teacher, Frank.
