Fine line script tattoo reading diabetic, with a pink cross in place of the t and a small heart at the end, on the inner forearm.

Diabetic script with pink cross on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo spells the word diabetic in thin, flowing black script across the skin. The letter t is crossed by a small pink cross, and a tiny outlined heart finishes the word. The photograph is taken straight on with soft, even lighting and the lettering sits centrally in the frame.

The sign was meant to say Pennyworth's, but Ruth had spent the best part of an hour on the t, because her father had always crossed his t's in red. She had been told it was vanity and had kept doing it anyway. Gulls worked the harbour wall outside the window while the gold leaf dried in the thin winter light.

Dev, her apprentice, leaned on the counter with a mug of stewed tea and asked why she bothered. Nobody reads a t that closely, he said. The shop would be full of sugar and children by Saturday, and the sign would be read once, by someone with a bag of sherbet lemons in one hand.

She told him about the summer her father lettered a wedding marquee at Robin Hood's Bay, names looping across white canvas. The bride's mother had stood beneath it weeping at the wrong moment. Her father had added a tiny heart after the last name, a thing nobody had ordered. Ruth found it in the proof years later and never had the nerve to paint over it.

She picked up the fine red sable and touched a small cross onto the crossbar of the t. Then she sat back on her stool. Dev squinted at it. 'Now it's a bit of a secret,' he said. 'That's the idea,' she said, and locked the shop door behind her, leaving the sign to dry in the cold.
