Diabetic script lettering on inner wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The photograph shows a close-up of the inner wrist with the word Diabetic in a flowing script, with a capital D and lowercase letters in black ink. The figure 1 between the t and c is filled in teal, standing out against the black. The text is centred on the wrist and fills the lower half of the frame against plain, evenly lit skin.

Every morning at five she came down with her sleeves rolled and set a small brass tin on the shelf above the urn. Its paper label was in her looping hand: Diabetic, with a blue pencil stroke under the figure she kept for her own counting. Nobody remarked on it. Fergus, the cook, only nudged the sugar bowl towards her with his boot. She kept the surgeon's list folded behind the tin, and she never once read it aloud.

By the third week the bread was going green at the edges and the tins were down to beans and one crate of oatcakes. On the fourth morning I found the brass tin empty on the shelf. I asked where the sugar had gone, and she said a deckhand's boy had a fever and needed it more than a woman with a steady hand did. I opened my mouth to argue and she handed me the chalk instead.

When the lifeboat finally came alongside, she rubbed the board clean with her cuff and left one word standing in the corner, the blue stroke still faint beneath it. I asked her why she hadn't wiped it. She said the boys would need reminding that someone had counted for them.
