Black typewriter-style lettering reading type 1 diabetic on the inner forearm near the wrist, in a Lettering style.

Type 1 diabetic lettering on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the words type 1 above diabetic in a typewriter-style serif font, set on two lines and filling most of the frame. The lettering is in solid black ink with clean, even edges and slightly uneven stroke weight typical of a typewriter typeface. The pale skin tone and soft, even lighting keep the focus on the text, with the inner wrist and forearm visible at the edges of the frame.

Dear Maureen,

The Olivetti came back to me on Tuesday with its paper bail mended and a new platen rubber, and I thought of you straight away, because your father typed every word of his speeches on it and the number one key has always been a bit of a liar. Old machines did that. They used the figure 1 for a lowercase l, so the key said one but the page said l, and nobody complained because nobody reads a typewriter the way they read a screen.

I cleaned the type bars with a stiff brush and a drop of paraffin, and under the grime there was a lot of ink from the sixties. I found a sheet still rolled inside, folded twice, with a draft of vows in his capitals. He had typed "I will love you until the end of the road" and then, crossed out in a different ribbon, "I will love you until the road ends." He never could decide between a full stop and a comma.

I have put the machine in the box with the wooden lid, and I have wrapped the sheet in tissue. You can collect both on Saturday before the wedding rehearsal. Bring a cup of tea if you like, because the kettle in the back still works though nothing else does.

Yours in ribbon and oil, Frank
