Diamond column tattoo down the spine

Geometric · Back · Colour · Photo

A woman seen from behind, with her hands raised to her hair, shows a vertical column of stacked diamond and chevron shapes down the centre of her spine. The linework is solid and symmetrical, rendered in a metallic gold or white ink that stands out against her tanned skin. The composition is a wide beach scene with sea and sky behind her, and the design occupies the centre of the frame.

Old Mabry kept the tally for the orchard at Coldharbour, and she kept it on the wall of the press house in chalk. Every bushel of Blenheim apples that went down the lane was a stroke, and every fifth stroke she drew across as a diamond, the way her mother had taught her, so the count could be read from the door without a candle.

That August the pickers were short. The medlar at the bottom of the orchard had dropped its fruit early, and the children who usually carried the ladders had gone off to the coast. Mabry worked alone with a basket on her hip and a ladder she dragged from tree to tree. By the third week the tally ran past the wall and onto the lintel, and the crates were still not full.

On the last evening a stranger came up the lane in a coat too heavy for the weather and asked for work. Mabry gave her the high branches. She picked them clean and said nothing, and when the light went she stood at the press house wall and painted a column of diamonds below the chalk, one stacked above another, each sharp and even, with the gold ochre Mabry kept for the cider barrels. When the last one was finished the stranger was gone down the lane and had not taken her wage.

In the morning the crates were full, and the painted shapes had not run, though the rain came in hard overnight. Mabry never learned who the stranger was. Each late summer after that she painted the column again, and the diamonds that caught the sun stayed bright longest.
