Gold chevron tattoo on upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A woman seen from behind on a sandy beach with both hands raised to her short hair, wearing a black bikini top. A small chevron or arrow shape in gold-toned ink sits centrally on the upper back between the shoulder blades, with simple bold lines. The pale sky and sea in the background keep the focus on the back and the metallic colour of the mark.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain has been at the market since Tuesday, Nell, and the gold leaf will not lie flat for anyone. I breathed on the first sheet to make it take and it folded over itself like a wet letter, so I have spent three mornings tearing it into bits and laying them down again with a squirrel-hair brush. Mr Okonedo at the fish stall says I am wasting good gold on a shop that sells pilchards. He may be right. But the arrow has to point somewhere.

The sign is for the cobbler's at the north end, under the arcade where the tin roof drips. Old Mrs Pryce wants a chevron above her door, the same shape her father cut into the lintel in 1931, pointing down towards the canal steps so customers stop wandering off to the bus station. I asked why gold when ordinary paint would do. She said paint is for shops that expect to stay. Gold is for shops that expect the weather to pass.

Yesterday the sun came out for twenty minutes and the whole arcade went bright. I held the brush still and the leaf took, cleanly, on the third stroke. I sealed it with a thin coat of size and stood back in the drizzle that came straight after, and the mark kept its shine through the wet as if it had been waiting for permission.

I will post you a photograph when it is dry. Do not tell Mum I have a cold, she will only want me home. The brush is wrapped in greaseproof and I have written the date on the handle, so you know which one to keep if I end up dying of pneumonia in a fishmonger's arcade.
