Small wave tattoo on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with wavy blonde hair stands with her back to the camera on a sandy beach, with the sea behind her. A small, delicate wave outline sits on her upper back, drawn in thin dark single lines. The tattoo is set against sun-tanned skin in the centre of the frame, with the ocean and pale sky softly blurred behind.

The lift stopped between the ninth and tenth floors with a shudder that Dennis Hale felt in his back teeth, and he said the word he always said about Tern House, the one the residents' association had asked him to stop using in the lobby. He pressed the alarm, got nothing but a hiss from the grille, and started up the concrete stairs with his toolbag knocking against his knee.

On the fourteenth floor the door of flat 88 stood open. Pat Lowry was at her window with a tea towel, wiping a patch of steam off the glass, and her granddaughter Ruby was kneeling on the sofa with one finger drawing in the fog. The line she had made was a single loop with a curl at the top, like a fishing hook that had changed its mind. "That's the sea," Ruby said. "It's not finished."
"The sea never is," said Pat, not turning round. Beyond the harbour arm the water was hard and silver, and a ferry was sliding out towards the Kent edge of the sky as if it had somewhere better to be. Dennis thought about the lift cable, how a tide of weight could drag a box up and down a shaft for forty years and then just stop.
He fixed it in twenty minutes with the manual brake release and a curse he kept under his breath. When he came back up to say so, Ruby had added a second wave beneath the first, smaller, its curl already fading as the glass cleared from the bottom. "That one's Grandad," she said. "He's in the car park."
Dennis didn't take the lift down. He took the stairs, slowly, and at every landing he could see the two waves on the window above him, one fading into the next.
