A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The diamond kite went up on Tuesday, the first proper blow since the equinox, and Mr Tallis let me hold the reel. You would have hated it. The line hums like a struck wire, and every few yards he has tied a knot so he can feel the pull through his palm: big where the wind leans hardest, small where it only breathes. He says a kite talks to you in knots if you let it. I thought he was soft in the head until it tugged mid-afternoon, one big knot, then three small, and I knew the wind had turned before the flags on the pier did.

We took the tail feather from the old grey gull that walked into the net shed. Tallis says a tail wants a feather, not a rag, because a rag only drags. He pinned it on with waxed thread while I kept the spine steady, and I was so careful my hands ached for a day after. It is a good feather. The barbs still knit together when you stroke them the right way.

Thursday it came down in the dunes beyond the groyne, and I went out alone at low tide to fetch it. The string was wrapped round a clump of marram as if someone had tried to tie it down on purpose. I counted the knots as I unwound them. Forty-one. Tallis told me he tied one for every day you have been gone, a small one for each day you wrote nothing, a big one for each letter you sent. I am not sure I believe him.

I left the last big knot untied so it can catch the next gust, and I have pinned your last letter to the spine beside the feather. If you come home for the August fair, bring your own string. The wind here doesn't wait for anyone, but it does like company.
