Diamond with eye and rain over waves
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A tattoo design drawn on paper inside a diamond-shaped frame. A dome-shaped eye or saucer sits under a starry night sky, with rays and falling droplets below it and stylised waves at the base. Pencil sketches of an eye and a scale pattern are faintly visible at the left edge.

The lamp above the harbour office had been dead since March, so Inspector Dora Kell read the tide tables by the glow of her phone. Low water at half past two. The slipway would be slick with weed and the fishermen would be awake, waiting for the rain to pass. Nobody on Quay Street ever said what they saw out past the breakwater, and nobody ever needed to.

She found the boy sitting on an upturned crate at the end of the pier, a flat tin of paints open on his knees. He had painted the sky onto the wood in tiny white stars, and under them a pale dome hung low over the water like a lid that had been lifted halfway. Below it, drops fell in straight lines, each one neat as a stitch. He looked up at her without surprise.
"It came back last night," he said. "Right over the Mariner's. Everyone stood on the roof and watched the rain fall up."
Kell crouched beside him and looked where he was looking. The waves at the bottom of the frame were drawn in tight, rolling scallops, and she could have sworn they were moving. The rain stopped. A single gull lifted off the mooring posts and was gone.
She took the sketchbook from his hands, turned past the eye he had started and abandoned, and wrote one line in her notebook: the sea keeps its own weather. Then she tore the page out and folded it into her coat, because some things were better left on paper than in a report.
