Dinosaur skull outline on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A dinosaur skull in profile is drawn as a single-line outline across the skin, with the jaw, teeth and eye sockets clearly shown. The lines are thin and mostly unshaded, and each contour appears twice, once in red and once in offset cyan, giving a doubled, anaglyph-like look. The skull fills the centre of the frame against a plain, pale skin background.

The skull came out of the castle wall on the third day of rain, and you were the one who noticed the sheep bone wasn't a sheep. Ancrum keep had been falling down for four hundred years, and the stones you were paid to catalogue had never before given up anything with teeth.

You carry it up the spiral stair to the solar, where the roof is gone and the grey sky sits in the window frame like a pane nobody ever fitted. Mr Pell, the surveyor up from Kendal, sets down his flask and asks what you think it is. You tell him it's a lizard that has been waiting. He laughs, then stops, because the jaw is longer than his forearm and the teeth curve backwards like a row of hooks.
That night you lay the skull on the trestle beside the old stereoscope from the village schoolroom, the one with brass lenses and cards of Alpine passes. You trace its outline twice in your notebook, once in the red pencil and once in the cyan, offsetting the second line by the width of a fingernail to match what the lenses show you. When you slide the card in and look, the two images drift together and the eye sockets sink into real hollows, deep enough to hold a thumb.
In the morning the skull is still on the trestle, but Pell has gone home and the notebook lies open where you left it. The red and the cyan lines no longer agree about where the jaw closes. You have stopped trying to decide which one is lying.
