Tamsin Hale was nine and did not believe a word of it. At dusk she carried a basket of Beauty apples down from the lower rows and set them in a ring along the wall, then sat on the stile with her knees drawn up, the way her grandmother had told her never to sit. She did not have to wait long.
The beast came on its back legs, grinning so wide the last light caught its white teeth. It was greener than the leaves and smelled of cut grass and warm pears. It bent to the fruit, stopped, and turned one orange eye on the girl. "You are not an apple," it said. "No," said Tamsin, "but I can pick every windfall in this orchard before the frost, if you leave the Bramleys alone."
The beast considered this with its head on one side for a long time. Then it nodded, and the two of them shook on it, its claw swallowing her hand. Tamsin picked for six weeks. In October the wall was bare and the grass was combed flat, and on the stile sat one Bramley with a perfect print of teeth in its skin and a single blue scale stuck to its stalk.
