Disney character tattoos collage on hand and arm

Hand · Colour · Photo

The collage shows colour tattoos of Disney characters: the Beast on the back of a hand, Scar above a ship, a Genie holding a lamp, and a full sleeve with Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, a yellow fish and the Beast again. The work uses bold outlines and smooth shading in orange, blue, green and yellow, with the characters filling each panel. Colour dominates across all panels.

The gold leaf ran out on the Tuesday, which Mavis Pardoe blamed on the ferry. She had four booth boards to finish before the Whitsun fair, and the only pot of gilt left had a cracked lid and a dead moth in it. So she mixed the Beast's mane from the sweepings of three tins of ochre, and he came up looking like a man who had been told his tea was cold.

Ferris Oakes, who ran the coconut shy and trusted nothing he could not win, stood at her elbow with his cap in his hands. He wanted the blue genie for the lamp board, grinning out of his own smoke. He wanted the boy who would not grow up, flying over the sea with a green glow at his shoulder, and a yellow fish underneath looking pleased with itself. Mavis said the fish was a lemon. Ferris said a lemon was a fish that had given up, and he would have it anyway.

His daughter Ada sat under the trestle with a tin of pins, watching the brush. She asked why the Beast's eyes were blue when the one on the poster had brown ones. Mavis told her she had painted him from memory, and the blue had come off the sea that morning when the ferry turned. Ada considered this and said that was a poor reason to change a face.

On the Saturday the boards went up above the coconut shy, and by dusk the genie's lamp caught the last of the sun and threw a yellow spot onto the sand. Ferris sold out of nuts before nine. Mavis stayed to watch the Beast glare down the pier, ochre mane and all, and decided he suited the place better than gold ever would.
