Frost had furred the gate latch again, so Nell Parry warmed it in her cupped hands before she could lift it. Behind her the barn door stood open a crack, which meant the cats had been out all night and were now arguing about whose turn it was to be fed. There were four of them, counting the grey one who never came in before the second bell.

Her father had called them the committee. Ginger, a ruined old tom with a torn ear, sat on the feed sacks as though he had bought them. Dot and Mab, the two sisters, hunted as a pair and shared everything except the mouse. The white one, Clemmie, had arrived on the milk lorry in a basket and had never once been muddy. Nell had decided the grey one was called Sunday, because he only turned up on Sundays, and nobody had argued.

This morning the committee was short. Clemmie sat on the hay bale by the door, washing a paw with great dignity, and refused to look at the empty corner where the water bucket usually stood. Nell followed her gaze and found a scatter of small tracks in the rime, leading under the gap in the boards toward the frozen beck. Beside them ran a second line of prints, larger and pressed deep, as if something had carried a weight.

She went after them with the lamp still lit, the sky going the colour of skimmed milk above the top field. At the beck the ice had a dark hole near the bank, and on a flat stone beside it, sitting upright as calm as a magistrate, was the missing cat. He was wet to the shoulders and deeply offended, and he had a length of blue baler twine clamped in his teeth. He dropped it at her boots as if it were a gift, and only then did she see that the twine ran back across the snow to the kitchen step, where her father had left the bucket out for her last night, full and waiting.
