Nineteen twenty-nine, the Palace Ballroom at Saltcombe, and the painter Tom Lark up a ladder for six weeks with a tin of rose pink and a bad cough. The owners wanted a garden painted across the ceiling, and Tom wanted a face to put in it. He found one in Nell Pascoe, who sold lemonade on the pier and held a red apple like it owed her money.

Every evening she sat for him after her shift, and every evening she asked him to paint the owl in the sycamore a little wiser than the owls in the books. He did. He painted the apple so bright the dancers below swore it dripped. Her father said a painter's girl would come to no good, and sent her off to the bank clerk's mother in Bristol that Christmas.

Tom finished the ceiling anyway. Sixty years on, they still say that on a quiet afternoon, with the band packing up, the owl blinks, and a rose near the bandstand is always fresh, though nobody has painted it since. Tom never saw Bristol. Nell wrote him one letter, asking him to finish her a rose at the wrist, and he never did. So if you find a pale outline down by the bandstand, leave it be. It's for her to colour in.
