Mr Okonedo kept the drawer of dividers locked, so when the foreman sent me to fetch the brass key on the Thursday, I understood the whole shop was waiting to see what I would find inside. The drawer smelled of lamp oil and damp card. Wrapped in brown paper lay the flourishes: scrolls like the curl of a fern, a row of leaf sprays, and a knotted filigree that Mr Okonedo swore had come from a Bradford hymnal press that burned in 1879.

He had set his last job from that drawer, a funeral card for his brother with two lines of text and nothing else. He asked me to make the border. I did not want to. I chose the plainest scroll, then the heaviest leaf, then, because my hands would not stop, the knot whose loops never quite close. He came to look over my shoulder with his spectacles pushed up and said nothing for a long time.

"Every divider is a road that turns back on itself," he said at last. "You can follow it to the middle, or you can lift the page away."

I pulled the proof from the press while the ink was still wet. The knotted loops had run into the leaves so the whole border looked like rain soaking into dust, and I could not tell where one flourish ended and the next began. I took the card home in my coat pocket. It was the first thing I had ever printed that I did not want to correct.
