By seven the wasps have already found the Discoveries on the low limbs, so you work the high side of the old Bramley first, where the light comes in sideways and the fruit still holds its bloom. Mr Tully left the orchard to his nephew with a single instruction written on the back of a seed catalogue: keep the wreath gate painted. Nobody in the village knows what the wreath was for. It is a laurel, two arms crossing at the stem beneath a single bud, and the paint has flaked to grey around it.

Your basket hangs from a hook on the ladder. Every third tree you stop, cut a length of green garden wire, and twist a sprig of leaves into it the way Tully taught you, so the apples can be tied and carried without bruising. He called them ornaments, which made the cider men laugh, but he never sold one. He gave them to whoever came to the gate with a question.
The woman from the Post Office comes up the lane at noon with a torn note about her husband's allotment. She asks whether the wreath means a prize. You tell her what Tully told you: it means someone stayed. She reads the bud at the centre, nods, and takes the sprig you offer without asking what it costs.
By four the grey light has come back into the rows and the last crate is on the cart. You paint over the wreath's left arm, just the flakes, and leave the right arm bare, because the bud is still wet and you want the sun to find it when the gate swings open in the morning.
