The stencil stall at the end of Cutter's Row had been Ruth's mother's, and before that a man called Dev whose handwriting still ran along the price tags in faded blue. Ruth sorted the sheets each morning by column: flowers on the left, then the leaf sprays that looked like they were falling, then the dots and rings, then the scrolls, and at the far right the border strips that sold best to people who wanted something to wrap around an arm and say nothing about why.

A boy came on Thursday with a torn photograph of his grandmother's wrist. He wanted the five-petal flower with the spiral heart, the one the old women drew on palms before weddings. Ruth pulled the sheet from the drawer, held it up to the light so he could see how the petals curled inward like something listening, and told him the spiral was the hardest part. You had to let the line go round three times before you let it stop. Most people rushed the centre and it came out looking like a bruise.
He bought the flower and two of the teardrops, which he said were for his cousins, and then asked about the zigzag border, the one with the triangles stacked like teeth. Ruth said that border was older than the stall, older than Dev, older than the street itself. She said it was meant to go on a hand that had work to do, because the points kept the eye moving and the eye stopped on anything still.
He came back in a month with the flower drawn on his own wrist in biro, a little crooked at one petal, and asked if she could look at it. She turned his arm to the window, looked for a long moment, and said the curl was right. Then she gave him a dot to take home for the gap he'd left at the base, and charged him nothing for it.
