At the Vell Bridge crossing the customs men kept a blue box that nobody had seen carried in or out. It stood between the toll hut and the hawthorn hedge with POLICE BOX painted on its four sides, and old Hanne Corbel, who had counted carts there for forty years, swore it was older than the bridge. Nobody touched the latch. The box did not seem to want touching, and the customs men did not want to be the ones who asked it.

One wet spring a stranger came walking up the Vell road in a red fez and a crooked bow tie, carrying a paper bag of walnuts and asking the way to the eleventh hour. The guards told him there was no such hour on the register and no such crossing. He smiled at them as though they had made a good joke, then looked past them at the blue box and said, rather fondly, that it was his. Behind him, down the slope, came a brass shell on three legs, rattling its one word over and over until the guards dropped their pikes and ran for the hut.
Rosalind Thorne had waited at the hedge for nine years, ever since her brother walked through the gate and did not come back. She had planted blue roses along the ditch to mark the place, and they were the only things in the valley that grew in winter. She stepped between the brass shell and the stranger and said, "He is late, that is all. He is never lost." The silver-faced figures that followed the shell stopped at the ditch, as if reading the roses.
The stranger took the walnuts out of the bag, set them on the step of the box, and went inside. The door swung shut without a sound. By morning the box was gone and the walnuts were sitting in a neat row on the stone, and the roses had opened all the way along the hedge, blue as the paint had been, with one petal lying on the step where somebody had stood.
