A scattered sheet of illustrated objects drawn in solid black and light blue with white line details and dotted shading. The motifs include a TARDIS, a Dalek, a Cyberman head, a fez, a sonic screwdriver, a pocket watch, a bow tie, 3D glasses, a fedora, a gas mask and a severed-looking arm, with small tally marks filling the gaps. The layout is loose and balanced, with the TARDIS and Dalek as the largest elements.

Nobody pawns a blue police box at ten to midnight, so I let him in on the strength of the umbrella alone. He had a carrier bag of odds and ends and laid them across my counter one by one: a fez with a grey tassel, a bow tie, three pairs of cardboard 3D glasses still in their cellophane, a silver pen that hummed when he thumbed its end. There was a gas mask, a fedora with a band of tiny brass cogs, and a helmet with a grille where its mouth should be. I told him we only take what we can price. He said he'd price them himself, and tapped the scratches cut into the glass of my case, rows of tally marks, as if I'd been counting something.

The pocket watch was the only thing I could put a figure on, because it ran backwards. When I wound it, it made a noise like someone clearing their throat in a far room, and the hands swung round to a time I didn't recognise. Out on the pavement the Dalek he'd left by the door turned slowly on its base to face me, and I heard the plunger on its arm click twice. I should have rung someone. Instead I wrote out a receipt for four pounds, and the man smiled as though he'd been expecting a worse offer.

At six, when I locked up, the box was still in the alley, its lamp burning in the windows like a kitchen light left on for somebody coming home late. The door stood ajar. Taped to it was a card in handwriting I'd know anywhere, reading PLEASE COME, and beneath that, in my own hand, the price: one trip, no returns.
