Dalek with EXTERMINATE banner design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A Dalek sits at the centre of the drawing with a ribbon banner across its base reading EXTERMINATE, and wisps of smoke or curling lines rise from its dome. The linework is clean and the shading is soft grey pencil, with heavier tones on the dome and the lower skirt. The design is drawn on white paper with a spiral binding visible at the left edge.

Nobody at the Hesketh Bottom summer fête took Gordon Ruddle seriously when he wheeled his lawnmower onto the green, but he had been planning it since Easter. He had sprayed the mower's bonnet silver, fixed a dustbin lid to the top for a dome, and bolted a bicycle pump to the front as a plunger arm. Across the skirt he had stretched a strip of gold ribbon, lettered by hand in the wobbly capitals of a man who once did signs for the Co-op. It said EXTERMINATE, and the vicar, reading the entry card, asked whether it was a joke about greenfly.

'It's about the marrows,' Gordon said, though nobody had asked. Ivy Threlfall had won Best Marrow for nineteen years running, and she had the sort of smile that made the judges reach for their clipboards before she opened her mouth. Her entry, Duchess of Hesketh, sat on a velvet cushion beside the tombola, and Gordon had been eyeing it all afternoon with the patience of a man who keeps a list.
The judging began at two. Gordon pumped the plunger arm, and a rubber cup borrowed from the gents' at the Working Men's Club went thock against the edge of the cushion. Ivy shrieked. The marrow rolled, slowly and with real dignity, into the tombola drum, which was full of raffle tickets and, as it turned out, a loose sack of compost. Gordon apologised in the manner of a man who meant none of it.
The judges gave him a rosette for Most Thorough Entry. Ivy did not speak to him for a year, but every August since, a marrow has appeared on his doorstep, wrapped in gold ribbon, with a note in her neat hand: 'Your move.'
